Tangerine
Our climb up Yew Street placed us in front of Zen for a moment, contemplating the line-up. while standing we were queried by a group of out-of-towners as to where to find the best breakfast. After spending some minutes assuring them that they were in fact waiting in line for one of the finest breakfast experiences in all of Kitsilano, we proceeded next door to Tangerine.
It turned out to be faulty logic that led us to believe the wait at Tangerine would be shorter, and after 15 minutes we found ourselves muttering “this better be good” under our breath and the hunger pains began to make us more and more irritable. The mood came to a head when another pair arrived after us and, surveying the restaurant for empty seats, asked us if we were really all that hungry. My lion stare caused a quick retreat for this little breakfast hyena.
Once seated, we were promptly greeted with the standard coffee option, to which we both eagerly nodded our heads with caffeine-starved intensity. We added a freshly-squeezed orange juice to that preliminary order, which arrived promptly, and was consumed to its entirety just as rapidly. Amazing how quickly you can spend $2.75 plus tax.
A couple more visits from our server Jack (who clearly had a soft-spot for Agent M) and we were ready to order. Agent M was on the attack with his request for a $7.95 scramblette complete with roasted tomato, goat cheese, and basil. While enticing on paper – not many items can launch such a spirited debate over whether a scramblette is indeed a combination omelette and scramble, or just a small scramble – Agent M was not altogether impressed with the result. It was at this moment that we lamented the presence of our staple reviewer, whose less-than-discerning palette often sees him rabidly consuming the leavings of others at the table.
I opted for one of Tangerine’s oft-fantastic $8.95 bennys, and was not disappointed. The mushroom-and-onion was a subtle combination that required some delicate processing, but I wasn’t in the mood for a flavour explosion this morning so the pace was perfect.
We lingered over coffee for a few more minutes, when a too-tender, hand-on-the-shoulder query as to whether he wanted anything further left Agent M feeling like it might be time to hit the road. Full marks for friendly staff.
